Contraception Myths

ANKASMART!

MYTH:

Vasectomy affects “manhood”

FACT:

  • A vasectomy is a permanent method of contraception(93).
  • It will limit the ability of impregnating a person, but it will not affect "manhood", satisfaction or sensations(93).

MYTH:

Modern contraceptives are uncomfortable and unhealthy

FACT:

  • If you have any medical condition, talk to a doctor or nurse about which birth control methods are safe for you to use. Be aware of any possible side effects the contraceptives may cause and see a health professional if needed(60).
  • Contraception can significantly improve the health of those giving birth and their babies. Contraception minimizes the risk of unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions, thus minimizing the risk of dangerous complications and death(125).

MYTH:

By taking the Contraceptive Pill, you will not be able to get pregnant in the future

FACT:

  • With the exception of Tubal Ligation and Vasectomy, all other contraceptives should be temporary(125).
  • With proper use, you should be able to conceive after you stop taking the pill, unless you or your partner is infertile or has a medical condition that prevents you from conceiving.

MYTH:

All types of condoms protect you from both pregnancy and STIs

FACT:

  • Condoms made of lambskin protect you from pregnancy, but NOT STIs(77).
  • Latex and plastic condoms prevent both pregnancy and STIs(77).

MYTH:

Spermicide, cervical caps and diaphragms are barrier methods of contraception, which means they protect me from both pregnancy and STIs.

FACT:

  • These barrier methods prevent pregnancy by blocking sperm from entering the cervix and from traveling to meet the egg.
  • When used alone, they do not prevent STI’s, which is why you should use these methods with condoms(47,52,55).
