Symptoms
Some people may not have any symptoms of gonorrhea
(114), while others may experience:
- Vaginal bleeding in between periods
- Unusual vaginal or rectal discharge or bleeding
- Pain or burning feeling when peeing
- Pain when having a bowel movement
- Greenish, white or yellow discharge from the penis
- Swollen or painful testicles
Symptoms are curable with proper medical care and treatment
Who is at greater risk?
- Common in people aged 15 to 24
- If you are sexually active and do not practice safe sex
Screening & Testing
- Urine sample
- Throat or rectal swab
- Urethral swab
- Cervical swab
Treatment
- Prescribed medication - Take all the medication required and do not share medication
- After a couple of days of getting treatment, if symptoms persist see a medical professional
- After treatment has completely finished, wait a week before having sex again
Prevention
- Practice safe sex
- Limit the number of sexual partners you have
- Get tested for STIs
- Use latex condoms consistently and correctly every time you have sex
