Gonorrhea

A bacterial infection that can occur in all genders

It is spread through vaginal, anal or oral sexual contact

Symptoms

Some people may not have any symptoms of gonorrhea(114), while others may experience:
  • Vaginal bleeding in between periods
  • Unusual vaginal or rectal discharge or bleeding
  • Pain or burning feeling when peeing
  • Pain when having a bowel movement
  • Greenish, white or yellow discharge from the penis
  • Swollen or painful testicles
Symptoms are curable with proper medical care and treatment

Who is at greater risk?

  • Common in people aged 15 to 24
  • If you are sexually active and do not practice safe sex

Screening & Testing

  • Urine sample
  • Throat or rectal swab
  • Urethral swab
  • Cervical swab

Treatment

  • Prescribed medication - Take all the medication required and do not share medication
  • After a couple of days of getting treatment, if symptoms persist see a medical professional
  • After treatment has completely finished, wait a week before having sex again

Prevention

  • Practice safe sex
  • Limit the number of sexual partners you have
  • Get tested for STIs
  • Use latex condoms consistently and correctly every time you have sex
