MYTH:

If your partner has an STI, it will be visible

FACT:

Not all STIs have symptoms. Sometimes, an individual may be unaware that they have an STI. Being tested is an accurate, safe and effective way to find out if you have an STI.

MYTH:

You can only get an STI from vaginal sex

FACT:

Different types of STIs can be transmitted in different ways. There is a risk of transmission through: vaginal, oral or anal sex; contact with blood; skin contact with an open wound; or sharing needles for drug use with someone who has an STI

MYTH:

Only certain types of people will get an STI

FACT:

Anyone who is sexually active or engages in sexual contact, is at risk. Not all types of contraceptives will reduce the likelihood of transmission – properly using a condom will decrease the risk.

MYTH:

HIV & AIDS can be transmitted through: Kissing, sharing food, toilet seats and mosquito bites

FACT:

HIV & AIDS cannot be transmitted through:
  • Healthy skin that has no open wounds
  • Kissing, hugging and shaking hands
  • Sharing food
  • Sitting on toilet seats
  • Getting bitten by mosquitoes
