Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is a very common parasitic STI and is transmitted during sex.

If you are infected with trichomoniasis(118) it is common for an individual to have no signs or symptoms.

Symptoms

Primary Stage:
  • Some people may not experience any symptoms as all, while others will:
    • Discomfort or itching in the penis
    • Irritation when ejaculating or urinating
    • Discharge from the penis
    • Discomfort or irritation around the vagina
    • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Feel uncomfortable during sexual intercourse

Who is at greater risk?

  • Anyone who is engaging in sexual activity is at risk.

Screening & Testing

  • A physical exam must be performed by a healthcare professional and a laboratory test must be completed to diagnose.

Treatment

  • Oral medication taken as prescribed by a healthcare professional

Prevention

  • Do not participate in sex within 7 to 10 days after taking the medication.
  • Practice safe sex
    • Use a latex condom correctly every time you have sex
    • Talk to your partner about each of your sexual history before having sex
    • Reduce the number of people you choose to have sex with.
